Rome

The inspiration to record ROME came in May of 2017. I was having a guy getaway reunion with 4 college friends, and one of those friends proudly proclaimed he had decided, at age 58, to get married. The remaining 3 of us looked curiously at each other and said, “Carl, …..who is she and why don’t we know about her?”  Carl’s response was that he had not found her yet, but he had decided he was getting married. The story dates back to nearly 3 decades ago.  Carl had a very serious relationship with somebody that just wasn’t ready for a commitment, so she moved on, somewhat breaking his heart. He never really developed a serious relationship after that, and our friend circle is convinced that he kind of …….rushes things. So Carl, here’s my advice song for you. Take it slow. Take it easy. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

As for the musical approach, I wrote and sang the song, and played keyboards, piano , and acoustic guitar. Jody Boyd engineered the track, along with playing drums, percussion, and some additional coloring guitar. The song was intentionally designed to start very slowly and very ‘open’, with limited and controlled energy, so as to emulate the lyrical element. ROME picks up pace as it develops until it reaches a full boat of harmonies, counter melodies, and rich and deep rhythm section accompaniment.   For whatever reason, this song……’amongst friends’, is a favorite.
